The Lake District of Patagonia The Lake District is one of the most picturesque regions in the world. Bariloche is the Argentine gateway to Patagonia and the southern base for Snofari Expeditions. The Southern Volcanoes of Chile Four hundred kilometers south of Santiago is the town of Chillan located in the transitional region of the Bio-Bio River. This area, known as the heartland of Chile, is surrounded by grape vineyards and farms and is easily reached by way of the legendary Skier's Train. Chillan is also home to Chile's most colorful open market. The High Cordillera of Chile The high cordillera of central Chile is reminiscent of the Wasatch Range near Salt Lake City, Utah, yet the geography is on a much grander scale. Four of Chile’s main ski areas are located here: Valle Nevado, La Parva, El Colorado, and, the granddaddy of them all, Portillo.
